The Conservative party has retained control of Plymouth City Council following last night's local elections.

The Tories held eight seats and won six more. They now have 37 councillors, while Labour has just 20.

A delighted Vivien Pengelly, the Conservative leader of the council, expressed her delight with how the evening went.

"I thought we'd pick up three or four new seats but we didn't expect six," she said.

Labour's deputy leader Chris Pattison, who held his Ham ward seat by just 49 votes, said: "I think it's very clear that people were not happy about some of the decisions that have been taken nationally.

"We have to take notice of what Labour is doing nationally and we have to put that right."

Labour MP Linda Gilroy added: "We've lost some excellent community councillors and for that I am very sorry.

"But I think this is a reflection of what's been happening nationally.

"And although we have lost some seats, my worst expectations have not been met."

The Tories will now select a cabinet which will be confirmed at the annual council meeting on Friday 16 May.

The overall turnout was 33.73 per cent.
